the brass hand

The owner of The Brass Hand in Clintonville, OH has Mexican and Japanese heritage, with an emphasis on Southwestern American culture. The linework within the logo I designed for this small business works in tandem with the storefront design to represent both of our cultural identities while achieving our common goal of sharing our passions with the community. I call this Honor Strategizing.

Honor Strategizing doesn’t just remix the elements or symbols of another culture or history or people but it does work on searching for any constituency’s value system, and then unearthing and celebrating that value system. By collecting, analyzing, and abstracting cultural elements, like ichi or pottery, to be utilized in the development of surface pattern and ornamentation, while responsibly paying tribute to their cultural origins.
