spatial alchemy studio

  • I asked my students to embark on a creative journey of translating a two-dimensional artwork into a tangible, three-dimensional architectural model. The exercise encouraged them to bridge the realms of art and architecture, challenging them to think critically about spatial connections and the transformation of visible surface qualities and characteristics into physical form while maintaining a visual connection to the original artwork.

The final project will require a similar task but they will be creating two-dimensional compositions of their own instead!

    artworks referenced include:

    • Untitled, 1938 by Ad Reinhardt

    • Boulevard Montparnasse, 1968 by Shirley Jaffe

    • Untitled, 2020 by Joshua Abelow

    • The Squiggly One, 2023 by Bethany Laurin

    student work shown:

Ilan Meltzer / Vanessa Smith / Christian Evangelista / Sophia DeVito / Caroline Michalski / JD Cochran / Luke Ingrando / Gianna Delucia / Annabelle Montgomery / Carter Mraz / Jacob Dolanksy

  • The final project revolves around the synthesis of aesthetic considerations with programmatic functionality, achieving a harmonious balance between visual stimulation and the educational needs of the building’s young learners.
