In a small residential city street in Cleveland Ohio there was a vacant garage with a collapsed roof sitting on an overgrown plot of land. In an era of cheap commodified construction parts, this project calls for a return to craft and ad-hoc. A Corten steel screen protects the original brick building on one side. The client wanted to cut the pattern by hand, so we designed a stencil they could use inspired by our love of rough lines, the buildings wonky history, and the clients love of Joan Miro. The project retains a sense of authorship and presents a strong case for the success of collaborative aesthetic games.

In addition to the garage renovation, a surrounding house will break ground in 2021 with a projected completion in 2024, as it will be built by the owners.

This project also poses a strong aesthetic challenge—that the surrounding warehouses and detritus of Cleveland should be celebrated. Honor Strategizing was used to gather up cultural elements from the surrounding architecture.
